Save the Date: Convening Private Sector Investment in Climate-Smart Commodity Production in Southeast Asia
In March 2017, USAID, the Asia Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Partnership and collaborating partners will host two workshops in Bangkok, Thailand on private sector climate investment in Southeast and South Asia. This event is the second workshop of the series and will focus on the land-use sector and climate-smart commodity production. You can learn more about the first workshop here.
Event Description
Countries in Southeast Asia have committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the land-use sector, while demand for food and wood products continues to rise. Regional and global markets are increasingly calling for commodities certified as sustainable, and leading corporations, banks, and investors are beginning to develop “climate smart” products and strategies. This event will address the challenges and opportunities to accelerate private sector strategies, finance, tools, and investment models into sustainable, lower-emission commodity production, and develop priorities for joint public-private sector action.
Who is Attending
- Leading corporations incubating and scaling climate strategies to support production of lower-emission agricultural and forest commodities
- National and regional banks, investment funds, and venture capital active in developing business and financing models for sustainable and lower-emission commodity production
- Internationally prioritized commercial certification platforms, including Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and UNEP’s Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP)
- Officials from countries in Southeast Asia committed to mobilizing private investment and finance for lower-emission commodity production
- Technology providers with tools to support cost-effective data collection and monitoring, verification, and reporting of emission reductions in commodity supply chains
- Donors and development partner organizations working to scale investment and finance for sustainable commodity production
Event Objectives
This event will highlight emerging strategies, tools, and technical services promoting more transparent and lower-emission commodity production in Southeast Asia, providing parallel insights on investment opportunities associated with national climate change targets (Nationally Determined Contributions or NDCs). Participants will showcase corporate commitments and goals, explore country-specific policies to enable commercial investment, identify priorities for aligning public and private sector actions, and engage in peer-to-peer learning on strategies for emerging markets.
Organized By
The event will be convened by the Asia Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS) Partnership, which supports actions to strengthen capacity for meeting climate change targets. Co-conveners include the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Climate Economic Analysis for Development, Investment and Resilience (CEADIR) activity, and collaborating partners.
