The East Africa Mangrove Carbon Project (Project) was initiated in 2013 to build capacity to (a) address sustainability issues in mangrove ecosystems, and (b) develop information needed for mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change while sustaining the value of ecosystem services derived from the landscape. An important tenet of this Project has been to develop regional capacity to engage REDD+ and the associated carbon science, monitoring and verification activities, and policy; accordingly, development of graduate students, professional development of staff, and enhancing institutional capacity are essential components of the work.
